"It's kind of a unique event because our alumni only go up to eighth grade," Maywood Avenue School Vice-Principal Keith Timmins told Daily Voice, noting that Maywood alumni go to Hackensack High School.

"But it is very cool because a lot of strong bonds were formed in Maywood during those years and many alumni carry those bonds for the rest of their life," Timmins added.

Maywood Alumni Night started in 2005, when the district celebrated the 25th anniversary of its championship basketball team. The district was so impressed with the turnout by former students that it decided to make an event for all alumni.

"It was really remarkable how many former students wanted to celebrate the school and their experience here," said Timmins, who himself is a Maywood alumnus.

The district is anticipating more than 300 alumni to come back for Alumni Night this year.

The night will feature basketball games in the Maywood Avenue School gymnasium, school tours and yearbook signings. At 8:30 p.m., the Maywood Inn will host an afterparty for alumni over the age of 21.

"It will be a full celebration of Maywood," Timmins said.
